2016 August - ARC Channel Islands - delayed

After several weeks of preparations, attending meetings and getting the boats safety equipment up to standard we made our way to Haslar Marina (all of 1/2Nm away !) tomeet up with our fellow participants. The weather however had different ideas and the winds remained solidly at F6+. Still it was a good opportunity to have some social events with our new found friends ! The baking competition was won by Paul on "Milla of Falmouth" for a fantastic stuffed loaf.

Our first overnight at the top of the River Auray at Le Bono

We moored on a convenient buoy and took the dinghy up to the centre of Le Bono. It's a really pretty spot and well worth the visit. One of it's claims to fame is that it is the final resting place of the legendary French sailor Bernard Moitessier (who sailed in his boat Joshua in the original Golden Globe alongside Robin Know Johnston in 1969. For French people their sailing heroes are like rock stars - rather unlike the UK !

Not strictly sailing - but here we are in Hong Kong watching the boats go by..

Our first visit to HK en route to Sydney. We stayed on Lantau Island which is where the airport is located and is either a short drive or a ferry ride over the HK central. We stayed at the Auberge in Discovery bay.  The hotel didn't disappoint, a great room with a shower that had panoramic views over the  bay. Discovery Bay itself is a lovely place. Feels a bit like a Sunny/Asian version of Clapham with lots of young'ish European professionals and young families. Not the frantic HK that we expected. We stay in HK itself on the way back.
